NoFollow – Have you ever wondered, when you put a link on someone else’s website whether or not that has any significance to your search engine
optimisation efforts?

Well today I’m going to share with you the answer to that question.

What is a Backlink?

A backlink is when you put a link on someone else’s website that points back to your website.

There’s a number of reasons people do this.

1. Click Through Rate or CTR

First, obviously to get clicks from someone else’s website into your website.  The more someone clicks through to your website the higher your click through rate. This is a good thing because it has an impact on improving the ranking of your website on search results.

2. Increase your Domain Authority

The other reason is to improve the authority of your website. What I mean by that is the more other web pages with high authority link back to your web page then that increases the authority or the relevance of your website. There’s a lot more to it than that but I’m keeping things as simple as possible.

Let’s just jump straight into an example

If you can see my, this is my latest blog article titled, “30 Day Blog Challenge Final Results“and if you scroll all the way to the bottom you’ll see comments left by readers and followers of my blog. Lets take a look at this comment from, “thisyearinmusic”.

Here is a comment left by a reader called 'thisyearinmusic'
If I click it you’ll go into that particular website right?  That’s what we expect but what about in terms of Google search engine?

So here a thing, a human being, just an average user, comes to a particular web page and if they happen to click this link then they will end up in another webpage.

When a search engine spider, which has the job of scanning all the links on a webpage and then indexes them.

The reality is the search engine spider doesn’t index every single link on a page. Let me explain to you why.

There are two kinds of links

1. Links that tell the search engine robots to follow

2. Links that tell the search engine robots not follow

Nofollow

nofollow … instruct[s] some search engines that the hyperlink should not influence the ranking of the link’s target in the search engine’s index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of internet advertising…  source Wikipedia

So if a link has a nofollow attribute added to it then the search engine robot won’t follow that link to go to the next target website.

Why is that important?

Well you know, you might spend a lot of time posting on other people’s blogs, forums, etc,. thinking that there is some relevance as far as search engine optimisation. Expecting your website to get a higher authority.

Not the case.

Have you noticed how it got this red dotted line around some of these links? What is that?

I installed this Google Chrome browser extension called “nofollow”.

What this extension does is it scans all the links on a web page and it detects any nofollow links on a webpage and marks all nofollow links with a red dotted border.

Install this browser extension if you want to know if user submitted links have a nofollow attribute. If the links do have a nofollow attribute then you’re better off looking for another website that does allow links to be followed. This way you can be sure that all your valuable time and effort to increase backlinks back to your website is going to be effective.

So there you go. I hope you’ve had some value from this content. If you did then please make sure to leave a comment and share it to your social network.
